Knowledge Test No. 6

1.

In 1968, Hall of Famer Bob Gibson posted one of the finest seasons of any pitcher in history. He was dominant by any measure. His 1.12 ERA in '68 is still the all-time major-league record for a 300-inning season. He completed 28 of his 34 starts. In his 304 innings of work, he allowed an absurdly low total of 198 hits and 62 walks. His won-loss record was 22-9. How he lost nine games is still a mystery. Of his 22 wins, 13 were shutouts. In fact, he shut out every opponent he faced that year, except one-the team that scored the fewest runs in the league. Name the one opposing club that Gibson failed to shut out in his greatest season.

2.

Babe Ruth finished his legendary career with the Boston Braves. Willie Mays finished his with the New York Mets. Hank Aaron hit his 755th homer as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers. Those facts are well known. But many Hall of Famers and All-Stars finished their careers with teams that they are not widely remembered as ever playing for. Examine this list of great players who achieved fame with one club and finished with another. Then name the team that each one finished his career with. Harmon Killebrew, Tom Seaver, Ty Cobb, Yogi Berra, Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, Warren Spahn, Ralph Kiner, Jimmie Foxx, Dizzy Dean, Eddie Mathews and Juan Marichal.

3.

The Babe's given first name is George. Mickey Mantle's given first name is actually Mickey, after Mickey Cochrane. But many of baseball's greatest players have nicknames and first names that they're known by that have made us forget their given names. Several are known by their middle names. Give the real first names of these stars: Duke Snider, Casey Stengel, Yogi Berra, Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Lou Gehrig, Dusty Baker, Cy Young, Honus Wagner, Dizzy Dean, Lefty Grove and Satchel Paige.

4.

When Orlando Cepeda was inducted into the Hall of Fame, he became the seventh Hall of Famer that won both the Rookie-of-the-Year and MVP awards. Can you name the other six?

5.

Willie Mays won 12 Gold Gloves. He would have won more, but they didn't start giving them out until 1957. Willie's one of eight guys that hit over 500 home runs and won a Gold Glove. Did you know that Mark McGwire won a Gold Glove? He's the latest Gold Glove winner to join the 500 club. Can you name the other six?

6.

Tampa Bay's Fred McGriff has quietly amassed a total of nearly 400 home runs. McGriff's teammate Jose Canseco has also hit over 400 homers. Only three other pairs of teammates played together while they had 400 or more homers. Can you name the three pairs of teammates with 400 or more homers? One pair of sluggers played together as recently as 1995.

7.

In 1995, Mark McGwire hit 39 homers in only 317 at-bats. He nearly became the second man in major-league history to hit 40 homers in fewer than 400 at-bats. Which Hall of Famer was the only slugger in history to accomplish the feat?

8.

Nolan Ryan debuted for the Mets in 1966 at age 19. He failed to win a decision that year, but went on to a fabulous career, in which he won 71 games after he turned 40. Only one pitcher in major-league history recorded victories before the age of 20 and after the age of 40. Can you name the Hall of Fame left-hander who accomplished this feat?

9.

Last year, the Tribe's Manny Ramirez drove in 165 runs-the most by anyone since the 1930s. Several other sluggers have topped the 150 mark in recent years: Albert Belle, Andres Galarraga, Sammy Sosa and Juan Gonzalez. Can you name the Hall of Famer who's the last man to drive in 150 runs in two consecutive seasons? Ironically, he failed to lead the league either year.

10.

Name the Hall of Famer who's the only man to drive in 150 runs in a season in which he also walked 150 times.

11.

Name the Hall of Famer with the most career RBIs of any player who never won an RBI title.

12.

Seattle's Edgar Martinez is having a fine run-producing season as the Mariners' DH in 2000. If he wins the RBI title, he'll become only the second DH to win an RBI title. Who was the only designated hitter to win an RBI title?
